Consolidation, densification, calibration and lamination of high-density batteries and electrodes

Next generation batteries for EVs must be of high density. To achieve this, multiple materials are combined, either by calendering or – for higher temperatures or pressures – pressing. IPCO’s ThermoPress systems, using double belt presses combining steel belts and PTFE, are trusted by our partners for this lamination and densification process. We are one of the only continuous double belt press manufacturers in the world that can use steel or PTFE belts to manufacture electrodes with area and line pressure. Themodular ThermoPress technology can provide the correct temperature and pressure profile for your continuous battery electrode process using consolidation, densification and lamination.

Enhancing production of dry battery processes

Electrodes are at the heart of today’s safer, more efficient solid-state and Li Ion batteries. When the material to produce these electrodes is supplied in powder form, IPCO’s high precision ScatterPro BX powder scattering system handles these materials uniformly and distributes them in a constant layer with maximum surface homogeneity, without breaking up the all-important fibrils. The result is higher quality electrodes, produced faster.

Thin film casting for fuel cell and battery separators

Film casting is a central part of the battery separator manufacturing process, creating precision membranes that sit between the anode and cathode in modern efficient batteries. Our continuous film casting system, incorporating an innovative Venturi dryer, enables production to exceptionally narrow tolerances. This makes it ideal for the high-precision battery separator films, membranes and ceramic tapes used in today’s fuel cells and solid state batteries.

Assisting manufacturers with design and testing

Our clients can work closely with the material science specialists at our productivity centers to test new battery separator materials, battery casing materials, and polymer electrolyte membrane (pem) fuel cell technology. We work collaboratively to conduct feasibility studies, hone manufacturing processes and undertake critical proof of concept testing.
