IPCO introduced the world’s first steel belt conveyor in 1901
Over time, steel belts can acquire stress patterns and become deformed, with a concave shape on the product side. This uneven tension can cause many further problems and is likely to limit the belt’s productive life. It also affects the quality of the finished product due to uneven pressure/heat distribution. This can affect any belt but is a particular issue in the production of board products such as wood based panels (WBP), which require controlled pressure and heat across the full width of the board.
The IPCO Shotpeener Pro is a powerful, efficient and portable tool that is used to blast steel shot across the belt’s surface to release tensions and rectify any deformation that has developed during operation.
The benefits of shotpeening include:
Improved quality of end product
Prolonged belt life
Less likelihood of unexpected repairs/downtime
More efficient production
Shotpeening can be carried out on any steel belt, but the main applications are:
WBP
Bake oven belts
Cooler belts
Shotpeening is not suitable where the product side of a belt has become convex, in food applications or where a belt has dirt on the surface. In these cases, roller flattening is the preferred solution.
Our Shotpeener Pro requires only one IPCO engineer and we can supply everything needed to complete the process. It is suitable for all types of steel belt and the process is usually completed in 3 to 12 hours, depending on the size of the belt and the level of deformity.
In most cases we can complete the shotpeening process without downtime. However, for belts with surface coatings (e.g. those used in chemical processing), production needs to be stopped for a day.
The unit is set in front of one of the drums at the point of belt infeed or outfeed. It is mounted on a beam and fed with compressed air. While the press is still running, a blasting head travels across the belt and ‘shoots’ tiny balls of shot at high pressure across the width of the belt. Air pressure, belt speed and type of shot can be varied to achieve the best result.
Need to know
The requirements for shotpeening are as follows:
Power supply: 100/230 AC, 50/60 Hz
Compressed dry air (6–10 bar, 1,500 l/minute)
An 80 x 80 mm box section steel frame may also be needed to support the rail on which the unit moves across the belt
The importance of maintenance
Shotpeening should achieve total flatness of the belt. We
strongly recommended that deviation across the width of the belt should not be allowed to exceed 30 mm. If it does, shotpeening may not be able to fully restore the belt, and the effect of shotpeening will be reduced.
Regular inspections will ensure that you can book shotpeening in good time and fully restore the belt’s flatness. The process can be repeated over time as needed.
IPCO service contracts are the easiest and most economical way to ensure your belts and equipment are inspected regularly.
IPCO developed and installed the very first steel belt over a century ago. We have been building our expertise and installing belts ever since. We provide service solutions for customers in a wide range of industries around the world.
We understand the importance to our customers of belt flatness, and developed our next-generation Shotpeener Pro to improve on the performance of existing shotpeeners. Compared with previous models, it offers:
Increased blasting effect
30% greater flattening capacity
Faster results
Streamlined process with less cleaning or replacement of wearables required
Easier, safe operation
Ability to restore belts that would previously have been beyond repair
IPCO as a partner
A concave belt presents an uneven surface that affects heat and/or pressure distribution and will reduce product quality. It can also impact equipment that touches it, causing damage over time. It’s important to take action as soon as you spot the problem, as it will become worse if untreated.
Shotpeening resolves the issue fast, with minimal downtime.
Discs on stock
Tailored discs with a very short lead time. A range of QuickDisc sizes and thicknesses are stocked for fast, time-sensitive steel belt press repairs.
Edge dressing
Restore worn belt edges by removing burrs, cracks, and friction damage with the Quick dresser tool to extend belt life and ensure safe operation.
Inspections
Peace of mind and an investment in the future. Belt inspections by trained service technicians focus on prevention to ensure smooth, reliable operation.
Installations of replacement steel belts
Belt installation made easy. An experienced installation team is available to provide as much or as little support as needed to get your equipment up and running quickly.
