Scaling Europe’s munitions supply chain
Rapidly changing geopolitics combined with continuing war in Ukraine is driving historic change in Europe, not least in the need to restructure and strengthen its defense capabilities.
In 2023, the European Union’s Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) resulted in a total investment of €1.4 billion to enable the defense industry to meet increased demand for ammunition and missiles. Powder and explosives were identified as the primary bottlenecks in the supply chain.
More recently the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) has established a €1.5 billion budget to further strengthen defense readiness and support Ukraine.
Alongside these EU-level initiatives, a whole raft of projects are underway across Europe to ramp up production of TNT and other munitions.
The essential role of TNT in modern defense
For over a century, TNT has been the default explosive for military applications. Its enduring relevance is due to its unique properties:
High stability: As a ‘secondary explosive’, TNT is insensitive to moderate shock, friction, or flame, requiring a primary detonator to trigger.
Low melting point: A melting point of 82 °C – well below its boiling/ignition point of 240 °C – means it can be safely melted and cast into shapes when required as a munition.
The properties mean it can be produced in high volumes, stored and then converted into munitions when required. For this, it must be produced in a form that is safe to transport, stable for storage, and easy to dose for subsequent reprocessing. This is best achieved through the production of small, solid flakes or strips.
Engineering safety: the IPCO steel belt cooling system
Despite its relative stability, TNT still requires careful, stress-free handling, without the use of processes that could create friction or heat. At IPCO, we have developed a unique system that allows molten TNT to be cooled and solidified in a safe and controlled manner, producing small, easy to handle particles, but with less dust.
The process begins with a unique feeding system that delivers the molten TNT with additive (suspension) onto a steel belt cooling line without the need for a pump or rotating components. As the slurry is transported through the system, it is cooled and solidified by means of indirect water sprayed against the underside of the belt. At the end of the system, the solidified TNT is discharged to the downstream handling process, breaking naturally and safely into small flakes/strips suitable for high bulk density storage.
